The Birthkeeping Project
“When I having my baby I miss my mum, she is far away… I scared but J tell me it is ok and when my baby comes I so so happy he is safe now. J visit me and (baby) M and bring me cake. Meeting J make my day happy.” F from Eritrea
The Birthkeeping Project is based on the model used by the Maternity Stream of the City of Sanctuary programme which actively welcomes and supports refugees and
asylum seekers newly arrived in the UK.
Brighton is an active City of Sanctuary (Sanctuary on Sea).
The aim of the Maternity Stream is to provide for the particular needs of pregnant and post-partum refugee, asylum-seeking
and migrant women in the form of a group of
volunteer peer supporters, doulas, breastfeeding counsellors, midwives and translators.
